Featured Project

Spring Loaded Camming Device for Upper Limb Amputee Rock Climbers

The goal of this project is to build rock climbing protection applicable to roped climbing disciplines for upper-extremity amputees. The main goal: design and build a 1-inch Spring-Loaded Camming Device (SLCD) for use with a proprietary prosthesis. This project will have a solid broader impact by allowing more people with disabilities, a typically marginalized group, to participate fully in a sport that has historically focused on non-disabled athletes.

My Work

Hire Me

I currently have a background in mechanical, robotic and electronic systems. As well as experience in machine shops, and manufacturing; including GD&T, reading and creating engineering drawings, a SolidWorks certification, strong Matlab skills, quality control and making prototypes. Recently I have added in-depth work with Big Data, online advertising, and data analysis to my skill set.

About Me

Joshua Gruener Photo

I am Joshua Gruener, a graduate of the Mechanical Engineering program at the Colorado School of Mines. I am enrolled in the Master’s program for Mechanical Engineering as well.

My previous experience includes in-depth work in manufacturing processes including sheet metal work, welding and CNC use. Additionally I also headed the in-progress and end-of-the-line quality control programs at FLX Bike during my tenure there. I also have experience in modeling reactive systems and using various programs such as LabView and other Data Acquisition software to predict system responses. My senior capstone project was a team-based creation of a “Baja Racer” style off-road vehicle which we built from the ground up. My particular focus on that project was the design of the steering as well as suspension.  I am passionate about exploring the outdoors, and I can be found in the mountains year round.

Growing up in beautiful Colorado, I have been involved in outdoors since I was a child. I am an avid mountain biker, snowboarder, and climber. Besides those activities I love camping and hiking, and love to explore more of the natural beauty around the country and the world. It is important to have the proper equipment for any activity, more so for the outdoors as camping hiking and climbing can be very dangerous and potentially deadly.

My Master’s project is focusing on designing a Spring-loaded Camming Device for handicapped climbers with only one hand, such as Maureen Beck who has agreed to advise on this project. The courses that I am taking are applicable to the manufacturing aspects of this project as well as the research and development, and quality assurance portions.
